First established by McIlhenny Company in 1989, the TABASCOŽ Community Cookbook Awards were created to recognize the best of the thousands of cookbooks published annually to generate funds for charitable causes while preserving America's rich culinary history. These awards also honor a uniquely American book format - the community cookbook, first published during the Civil War - and the dedicated volunteers who use it so effectively to benefit charitable causes.
Why Peeling the Wild Onion?
"Chicago" is the Native American word for wild onion. As an onion has many layers, so too does the cuisine of the namesake city. Peeling the Wild Onion uncovers those layers and captures the essence of the Chicago's culinary past, present and future in the new cookbook from the Junior League of Chicago. More than two hundred exceptional and creative recipes have been collected and tested by Junior League members, families and friends. These recipes are organized seasonally and peppered with culinary and cultural facts. Profits from the sale of Peeling the Wild Onion go directly to the community through the projects of the Junior League of Chicago. Through volunteer efforts, the Junior League of Chicago strives to serve at-risk women and families in the great Chicago metropolitan area through direct service, fund-raising, mentoring, advocacy and education.
